Jamaica and AI by 2030: A Realistic Assessment of Where thngs Are Going

By 2030, Jamaica is most likely to be a capable adopter of AI rather than a developer of it. The country has genuine digital foundations: 83% internet penetration, the Data Protection Act 2020, and a National AI Task Force established in 2024. But research investment sits at just 0.06% of GDP, and only 13 AI publications were recorded nationally between 2019 and 2024.

The outcome in four years will depend less on technology and more on whether Jamaica converts its policy groundwork into enacted law, funded institutions, and a trained workforce before the window closes. The people who will determine that are not in Silicon Valley. They are in Kingston.
