UWI AI Research Cluster, Caribbean
The University of the West Indies has established a regional AI research cluster to address both the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence in the Caribbean. The initiative brings together researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers across all five UWI campuses to promote ethical, inclusive, and impactful AI development.
Led by Dr. Curtis Charles and supported by senior academics across the Mona, St. Augustine, and Cave Hill campuses, the cluster focuses on interdisciplinary collaboration, postgraduate training, and the creation of globally competitive AI programmes. Each campus will contribute through dedicated AI labs, forming a connected network designed to advance research, inform policy, and drive innovation.
The cluster aims to ensure AI is used responsibly while unlocking benefits such as improved healthcare, efficiency, and scientific advancement, with a strong emphasis on supporting vulnerable communities and generating regional economic value.
